See A Natural Phenomenon - 📍Naruto Whirlpools, Tokushima

Naruto Whirlpool

The Naruto Whirlpools are a natural phenomenon that occur in the Naruto Strait between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Minamiawaji City in Hyogo Prefecture.

The whirlpools of the Naruto Strait are one of the "three major tides in the world", along with the Strait of Messina in Italy and the Strait of Seymour in Canada. The size of the Naruto Whirlpools is about 20 meters in diameter; the largest in the world.

Maximum whirlpools in spring & autumn

The Naruto Whirlpools reach their maximum size during the spring tides in the spring and autumn seasons. In particular, the autumn season is called whirlpool season, and is known for the "Autumn Whirlpool".  We recommend you to visit the area during this season because there is a high probability that you will be able to see a powerful whirlpool on the day of "spring tide".

How to see the Naruto Whirlpools

There are two recommended ways to see Naruto Whirlpools.

Onaruto Bridge

  1. The Uzu no Michi marine promenade is built just under the Onaruto Bridge that goes over the Naruto Strait. Overlooking the whirlpools from a height of 45 meters above the sea is thrilling.

Whirlpool Cruise

  1. "Whirlpool Cruise". You can see the whirlpools up close as you pass right next to the vortex. Pictures don’t do it justice – you will have to witness their power in person for the true effect.
