Nagoya Castle - Japan's first National Treasure

Nagoya castle

About Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle is located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. It is one of the three most famous castles in Japan and was Japan’s first castle to be designated a National Treasure.

It was completed by the Shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1615, but was destroyed in 1945 during the bombing of Nagoya in World War II.

It was rebuilt using the original methods and materials of the Edo period and reopened to the public in 2018.

The fish-shaped golden Shachis (Kinshachi) that decorate the castle top are a symbol of Nagoya. At Honmaru Palace, you can see the gorgeous Shoin-zukuri masterpieces (such as beautiful paintings and decorative metal fittings).
