Fun Onsen activities - 📍 Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma
Hot spring source
Cold winters make anyone want to take a bath in a warm hot spring!
Kusatsu Onsen is located in Gunma Prefecture and is one of the most famous hot springs in Japan. It takes only about three hours to get there from Tokyo, so you can stay overnight or enjoy a day trip.
The Yubatake is a hot spring source. It's a symbol of Kusatsu Onsen, gushes out 4,000 liters of hot spring water every minute, and is always filled with steam. Yubatake is located in the center of the hot spring town and has sidewalks around it, so it's perfect for a walk. If you get tired of walking, take a break at the free footbath "Yukemuri-tei". Soaking your hands and feet for a few minutes has a warm bath effect and is perfect for cold winters. This Yubatake is illuminated at night, it's fantastic and very beautiful.
Another thing that Kusatsu Onsen is famous for is "Yumomi". Most of the hot spring water in Kusatsu Onsen is nearly 50 degrees Celsius, which is too hot to bathe in as it is. However, if water is added to lower the temperature, the efficacy of the hot spring will be diminished. For this reason, Kusatsu Onsen came up with the idea of "Yumomi," a method of lowering the temperature of the hot spring water to a level where it can be used for bathing by placing a board about 180 cm long into the hot spring water and stirring it.
Yumomi" also softens the skin and serves as a preparatory exercise before bathing. At Atsunoyu, you can watch a traditional Yumomi and dance show with folk songs. You can also try the Yumomi experience yourself there!
