Tokoname's big lucky cat

Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture is famous for its pottery "Tokoname ware".

Along with Echizen ware in Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture, Seto ware in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Shigaraki ware in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, Tamba ware in Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, and Bizen ware in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture are certified as Japanese heritage sites.

The townscape "Tokoname Pottery Footpath", which retains the most popular atmosphere of the early Showa period, is famous as a tourist spot. Many artists and craftsmen still live and work in this village.

Tokoname is also famous as one of the largest lucky cat producing areas in Japan.

Maneki Neko (lucky cat in Japanese) is a lucky charm that is displayed with the wishes of prosperous business and thousands of customers, and can often be found around the entrance of shops in Japan.

There are more than 50 lucky cats, from large to small, in Tokoname City.

In particular, the giant guardian cat named "Toko-nyan" with a width of 6.3m and a height of 3.8m is a symbol of the Tokoname Pottery Footpath. Below that, 39 cat objects are displayed on the wall in "Maneki Neko-dori".
